Renew Your Helper's Work Permit Without the Stress

A domestic helper's work permit has a fixed validity period. Letting it expire — even briefly — puts both the employer and the helper in a legally precarious position. Employers can face fines; helpers face deportation risk. The solution is straightforward: start the renewal process at least three months before the expiry date.

We handle every step of the renewal: gathering and checking your documents, scheduling the FOMEMA medical examination, preparing the JIM application, and submitting it on your behalf. You do not need to visit the JIM office yourself — we represent you through the licensed agency channel.

If your helper's permit is already close to expiry, contact us immediately. There may still be options — but the sooner you act, the better.

What the Work Permit Renewal Process Involves

When to Start

We recommend beginning the renewal process at least three months before the expiry date on your helper's work permit. This accounts for document preparation time, FOMEMA scheduling (which may have a waiting period), and JIM processing. Starting late creates unnecessary risk.

Documents Required

Documents typically include the helper's current work permit, her passport (which must have sufficient remaining validity to cover the new permit period), employer's MyKad or identification, and completed JIM renewal forms. We prepare and check all documentation before submission to avoid rejection or delays.

FOMEMA Medical Examination

Your helper must pass a FOMEMA medical examination as part of the renewal process. We schedule the FOMEMA appointment and manage the results. If a health issue is flagged, we advise on the appropriate next steps.

Insurance and Levy

At renewal, you will also need to ensure that PERKESO social security contributions are current and that personal accident insurance is renewed or continued for the new permit period. We will remind you of these obligations as part of the renewal process.

Renewing at the Same Time as Contract

If your helper's employment contract is also coming to an end around the same time as the permit, we can coordinate both renewals simultaneously. See our Contract Renewal page for details on the employment contract process.

Renewal requirements and fees are set by JIM and FOMEMA and are subject to change. Information accurate as of . General guidance only — not legal advice. Verify current requirements at jim.gov.my and fomema.com.my.

FAQs — Work Permit Renewal

When should I start the work permit renewal?

At least three months before the permit expiry date. This gives us time to prepare documentation, schedule FOMEMA, and allow for JIM processing. Starting earlier is better — never leave it until the last month.

What documents are needed for renewal?

Typically: helper's work permit and passport, employer's identification, completed JIM renewal forms, and FOMEMA medical results. We confirm the exact current list when you engage us, as requirements can change.

Does my helper need a new medical exam for renewal?

Yes. FOMEMA medical examination is required at each permit renewal. We coordinate this appointment as part of the renewal service.

What if the permit expires before the renewal is processed?

An overstayed helper creates legal liability for the employer (fines under the Immigration Act) and deportation risk for the helper. If you are close to expiry, contact us immediately — do not wait.
